Milestone rewards: what Hyatt understands and most hospitality programmes don't

Mind the gap. Between Silver (10 nights) and Gold (30 nights) lies 20 nights of empty space. The guest passed the first tier, saw upgrades, but Gold feels far away. After 3-4 months — they psychologically disengage. That's momentum loss, and most programmes ignore it.

What Hyatt does

In World of Hyatt — after 30 nights you keep earning rewards every 10 nights: free-night certificate, suite upgrade, club lounge pass. It's a "mid-funnel reward" — not a tier transition but a standalone award that keeps the guest in flow.

Architecture: 3 types of milestones

  • Welcome milestones (5-10 nights) — bonus points, F&B credit. Goal: sense of progress in the first 90 days.
  • Tier-supplement milestones (20-30 nights) — club lounge pass, suite upgrade, anniversary bonus. Goal: prevent the guest from getting lost between tiers.
  • Beyond-tier milestones (50+ nights) — Gift Status, Lifetime status, experience rewards. Goal: retain the top 1% who are already elite and have nothing left to "sell" them on.

Why this works

Psychology research calls this "variable reinforcement schedule" — rewards at varying frequency create more durable behaviour than fixed ones. The guest doesn't know what reward comes at night 30, and the surprise drives a stronger dopamine response than a predictable one.

On ROI: Hyatt doesn't publish raw numbers, but their 10-K (2024) shows the Gold+Globalist segment yields 4.3× more profit per member than lower tiers — since the milestone mechanics launched in 2017.

What we do in TTE

In TTE.Loyalty milestone rewards are built into the earning engine. The tenant configures their thresholds (via UI) and links them to the reward catalog. Multi-axis: you can place a milestone on nights, on spend, on frequency, on engagement. Want "5 reviews = SPA day" — five clicks in admin.

For pilot tenants we recommend starting with 4 milestones (10n, 20n, 30n, and repeatable every-10n) — that covers 80% of the retention effect without overwhelming complexity.
